Vintage Japanese Menko Cards

Menko is an old Japanese game where players take turns tossing cards on the ground. If one player is successful in flipping another's card, she gets to picks up both. The winner is the one with the most cards at the conclusion of the game.

Menko cards are typically made from thick paperboard material. They can be round or rectangular and have printing on one or both sides. They are usually illustrated with images that are popular in the culture. This set of cards features cartoon characters from the late 1930s and early '40s. Included in the group is Doc and a couple forest animals from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The cards vary is size. Popeye is the largest at 4" (10 cm) across. The others all measure about 2.25" (6 cm) and appear to be unauthorized reproductions of Disney characters: Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket, Hiawatha, Mickey Mouse, and a couple of the Three Little Pigs.

Vintage Seven Dwarfs Bar Soap by Kerk Guild

This boxed set of Seven Dwarfs castile bar soap is A Kerk Guild Bath Product. Imprint: "© 1938 Walt Disney Enterprises." On the inside of the hinged lid, it reads, “Soap Perfumed With Fairy Land Flowers.” Additional text tells how Snow White taught the dwarfs to wash. The box measures 11" x 3" x 1.5” and contains six bars in individually marked sleeves. A seventh space is for Grumpy who "wouldn't take a bath so he gets no soap."

Each bar is engraved with a dwarf face and name. On the reverse side it reads, "Snow White's own soap by Kerk Guild."

The same Seven Dwarfs soap box concept was employed by Bertelli in Italy. See it in an earlier Archive entry.

Also check out these other examples of Snow White soaps:

Snow White: "Supper's not quite ready. You'll just have time to wash."
Dwarfs (to each other): "Wash?"
Bashful: "Why wash?"
Happy: "What fer? We ain't going nowhere."
Doc: "T'aint new years."

Original Artwork for 1967 Clorox Advertisement

In 1967, Clorox ran a Snow White ad campaign (see earlier post) to coincide with the North American re-release of the film that year. A one-page magazine advertisement appeared in most of the major periodicals at that time. This is the original artwork layout from that ad. Medium: mixed media on 12" x 15" illustration board (and protected by a clear cel covering).

An ad slick proof sheet of the final advertisement is pictured below. Only a few changes were made from the original design (e.g. Sneezy now holds a banner rather than a sign; the Hamilton wristwatches were updated to Bulova; Snow White's facial features).
